    Protest in Athens' national road

I participated at the protest in which we marched 1,5 km on the national road, to the Toll station of the national road of Athens, in Afidnes region.
The police helped in assuring our security on the national road as it does with protests like that.
At the toll station we allowed all the cars to pass by without paying the fee, for an hour, from both directions.
There is a long history about toll fees and how they are being (mis)calculated, and right now there is no automatic system to calculate a fee based on kilometers used on the highway as in other European cities.
A part of the national road was aquisited by a private company, which raised the fees (in conjunction with the state), without ensuring or providing the local communities, free roads to commute with, outside of the national road. This is  illegal according to european law.
(if you ask for money for a highway you need to provide the local suburbs, local roads to commute with).
Plus, the few local roads connecting the smaller cities that allready do exist, are allready blocked daily, because Police does not prohibit large trucks, to use them
The trucks are using them to avoid the toll fee, with the result beeing:
The national road at the exit of Ag.Stefanos, has 4 lanes. 3 of them are blocked for as long as 3 km everyday during ALL business hours, because of the trucks not using the toll station. The local people including me, cannot use the local roads to commute to do our business and errands.

The police should make truckdrivers and companies who own the trucks pay high fees for misusing the local roads and whoever wants to use the national road should pay for how many km he is using.

Now, I am forced to use the national road and everytime I go to a nearby suburb I need to pay 3,70 back and forth, just to get on the national road to go to a nearby suburb and return to my house.
People who are negative about the protest say it will become a political issue,
but the good thing is that the people who were present, didnt let any politician speak, and didnt want to be associated with ANY party.
    I WANT TO HIGHLIGHT THAT!
(it is usual here that parties try to use the peoples need to gather and protest about issues, for their own purposes, which has made people not want to join those protests after all - this is something that has lasted MANY years)
The problem is, that the people there didnt make a certain petition, but instead just protested and just showed their anger and their unapproval of the current situation which is only getting worse.
As you can see, men women children and elder people were present, and they all struggle with low income and the current business crisis, and are not willing to pay extra, for something that is clearly
    a) illegal and b) lets other people (truckowners) get away with misusing the local roads  c) not bearable with their monthly budget!

there will be another gathering next sunday. I hope by then someone in the new government makes a sollution happen, and untill then I (and others) will deny paying at the toll both.
The law allows me to just sign the paper saying that I am not willing to pay and they need to let me through.

A similar problem, exists at the Athens Patra national highway (also aquisited by a private company), where for a long time now, people have to pay highway tolls, for a road that is not a highway.
According to the european law, a road is called a highway, when among other things there a separator in between the two directions, and there are minimum number of lanes etc.
and a company or state, cant ask for people to pay toll, if a road doesnt meet this criteria.
But the company has installed toll boths and receives all the money, just as if there was nothing wrong.
People dont know they have a right not to pay and because of that these boths still collect money.

In my estimation, at least half of the people present in today's protest do not have internet access, or do not own a computer. I have read about these things online.
The greek media does not take the time to adress these issues at least not as much as is needed, and the only way for those people to know is the word of mouth or leaflets.
The initiative for the gathering was started from local nonprofits and organisations but they all have not so many members and dont own any websites to organize a better informational network.
Lets hope that next sunday even more people will gather up and maybe the message to the government will be clearer.

    my message is this:
-the police needs to stop truckdrivers from misusing the local roads with ANY MEANS! ( I will try to post a video tomorrow with footage of this rediculous situation)
-the toll fee needs to be calculated according to the kmh use!
-untill then noone should impose new extra fees

The previous minister (Souflias) had proposed to put extra toll at the local road too(!) as a sollution, which to me sounds really absurd. I hope that the new minister, will be able to make a decision that will be feasible for everybody.
