National EQUALITY March in DC
The National EQUALITY March took place on Sunday October 11, 2009. An estimated 150,000 to 200,000 joined the march down Pennsylvania Avenue that ended at the west lawn of the US Capitol. Speakers included activists Cleve Jones, Judy Shepard, Dustin Lance Black (Milk), Cynthia Nixon (Sex & the City), Derek Washington, David Mixner and many more.
These photos show several rally participants holding signs with messages like "End the Harm" and "Equality Across America" - also in the photos are Judy Shepard and Cynthia Nixon speaking to the crowd at the rally.
Rally organizes hope that the rally will motivate the President to act more quickly on promises he made to the LGBT community during the campaign. Promises like repealing Don't Ask - Don't Tell and introducing legislation to reverse DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act).
The community seemed to be split before the event, some said no one would show up and other thought that it was too early to be pressuring the President. After all was said and done they did show up and in quite large numbers.
Hopefully the president and congress were listening yesterday, seperate but equal hasn't worked in the past and it won't work for the LGBT community either. All we are asking for is EQUALITY... nothing more and nothing less!
