John Brown Arrives in Harpers Ferry!
John Brown and his men made their way into Harpers Ferry along the C&O Canal. They braved a steady and cold drizzle, walking in silence and in the dark to avoid detection. This historic moment in American history was reenacted October 16 at the exact same time and place as it occurred 150 years ago. This time Brown and his men were National Park historical interpreters and they were joined by nearly two hundred people who reserved these limited slots weeks ago. Their journey began, as it did 150 years ago, at the Kennedy farm in Maryland. They then navigated the four miles along the same rural roads that led John Brown and his men to the Federal Armory and Arsenal in Harpers Ferry. Dennis Frye, Chief of Interpretation, provided vivid and moving commentary on that fateful march and what may have been going through the minds of the 19 people who would ignite America's Civil War.
