John Brown's Raid Commemorated
Thousands braved chilly temperatures and driving rain to experience a variety of vivid and engaging events marking the 150th Anniversary of John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry. Robert Stanton, Interior's Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy and Management provided stirring words about the importance of the raid. Fred Morsell's brought the audience to its feet with his masterful and moving recreation of Frederick Douglass' 1881 speech about Brown and abolition. NPS employees and volunteers also organized interactive activities for young people. Events marking the Raid continue in the area through December 2, the anniversary of Brown's hanging.
