"The Barbettes" A Tribute to Female Barbers "Finally"

It has been a long road for many female barbers. We all remember the hack jobs our mother put on us when we were young. I can remember looking in the mirror at the crooked shape-ups and applying ointment to the nicks on my head.

I remember when I first went to the barbershop in Wyandanch, NY. There was a woman standing behind the first chair  as you enter the shop, asking clients sitting in the waiting chairs, "who's next".

Everyone would point to the male barbers in the shop of whom they came to get their hair cut. She would stand around and listen to the shop stories and shoot the dozens. Every now and again she would chime in with a smart remark but she had very few customers who would dare take a seat in her chair.

I never received a hair cut from her but, I remember as I got older she began to get more clients and she was eventually considered part of the crew as time went on.

Today, there are more female barbers all across the globe than ever before and they can cut  hair just as good, if not better than some of the male barbers in this predominantly male driven industry.  We have women like Zane Skerry who has been inducted into the Barber Hall of Fame. And the first female and African American to become President of the National Association of Barber Boards, Vera Winfield (Picture Attached) Shops like Trim and Knockout Girls who have all female barber staff.

The Barbering industry has changed and women have been a huge part of this change, so in light of this we celebrate their accomplishments with Episode 12 of Against the Grain Magazine. www.againstthegrainmag.comsee the cover "The Barbettes"  We feature, Stacy Kutz, Rachel Solow, Christina Goree, Natalie Monnie, Ladon, Nikki Hernandez of Truefitt & Hill.
