Typhoon Lupit back on track for Philippines landfall
Typhoon Lupit is back on track heading westward towards the northern coast of The Philippines. Lupit is forecast to make landfall midday Saturday, EDT, as a category two typhoon with winds of 95mph.
Typhoon Lupit had made a reverse-S earlier this week when stalled between upper-level steering systems. However, Lupit is now under the steering flow of a high pressure system over China which will bring the cyclone west over the next day turning west-southwest thereafter.
Lupit is expected to make landfall in the same area that saw three landfalls from Typhoon Parma just two weeks ago. Parma, along with Typhoon Ketsana which struck further south in Manilla on September 26, have killed more than 840 people mostly due to flooding not seen in over 40 years.
Current satellite estimates have Lupit containing as much as 1 inch of rain per hour. However, as Lupit interacts with land, these rainfall rates are likely to increase and some areas could again see as much as 15-20 inches of rain.
