This iReport is part of an assignment:
Health care town halls |
Social Security & Health Care
It's not only the healthcare and insurance industry that needs an overhaul -- SSA needs one badly.
My husband has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Doctors estimate he has 6 to 9 months to live. After much paperwork and interviews he has been "approved" to receive SSA disability.
The catch -- payments won't be made until March 2010! This is a system he has paid into for more than 30 years, yet when we need it, it is not available.
So now, like many Americans, he has no income. I had to take a salary cut earlier this year and am now doing the job of two people. Still, I am glad to have a job.
It is open enrollment time for his medical plan and the employee portion has more than doubled.
Expenses are up, income is down and yet we must wait six months before the SSA will allow us benefits! This is an outrage. What good are benefits if you can't get them when you need them?
