    Puerto Rico explosion

    More from anjanadayal

    Puerto Ricans reminded of 9/11

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     anjanadayal works as a psychologist with the Red Cross. She said that children she spoke to who witnessed the explosion were frightened, and reminded of 9/11.

The explosions in 15 tanks full of air plane fuel, unleaded petrol and diesel in Catano, Puerto Rico left the population, especially the children, living in the nearby area scared. The explosions took place around 12:30 am on the 23rd of October 2009. People thought it was some type of terrorist activity. Some people compared the feeling to the feel at the time of 9/11. A huge black cloud could be seen from about 40 miles away.

Though there are no reports of injuries or deaths but there is quite a bit of damage in the houses situated in the proximity. Around 500 families from the nearby areas were evacuated in anticipation of more explosions and to prevent respiratory problems that the smoke may cause. The governor of Puerto Rico has declared 'state of emergency' as a result of this event. Five municipalities Bayamon, San Juan, Guaynabo, Catano and Toa Baja are included in the state of emergency. The State administration is working with FEMA to request for assistance these municipalities and the affected people.

Fire fighters, police and military personnel, Red Crossers and others started their response immediately after the event occurred. When this reporter went to ground zero as Red Cross worker to give water to the fire fighters at around 12: 00 pm, there were working relentlessly without no drinking water or anything to eat. When their thirst, while working in extremely hot environment, was quenched they gave blessings to the Red Cross volunteer, "Mucha bendiciones por esta ayuda". One of the fire fighter reported that they will continue to work for long hours with brief breaks in between. There is still no estimation as to when this fire will be extinguished but the fire fighters are trying to contain the fire by keeping the area cool with water.
