    The Spanishood of a Neighborhood

     

    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     sjunat55 tells me he's been wanting to snap photos of Spanish Harlem for weeks. "Along with the South Bronx and Washington Heights, it remains a center of Spanish life and tradition," he said.

    Signs of Spanish Harlem- El Barrio- a most Spanish of neighborhoods in New York City.
    1-Detail of the mural "The Spirit of East Harlem"- the flag of PuertoRico, a US territory whose immigrants came to the area in the 1950's. Mural by Hank Prussing with Manny Vega, 1978.
    2-Local businesses with Spanish names dominate the streets with specialties from all around Latin America. Keep in mind this is New York City.
    3-Luis Munoz Marin, the first elected governor of Puerto Rico, The street across El Barrio is named after him.
    4-A license plate - Puerto Ricans served in WW2, Korea, Vietnam and the Gulf Wars.
    5-Detail from The Spirit of East Harlem- depicts family life, drawn on a brownstone building.
    6-Spanish meat market- local stores are centers of daily life.
    7-Tortillas, mangoes- street vendors from all over.
    8-Signs of diverse businesses - local enterprise for the locals.
    9-A candle store- not the usual scented candle variety- Religious and votive candles- a sign of tradition through generations.
    10-El Museo del Barrio- one of the top Spanish art museums in the country, recently re-opened. Keeping track of the neighborhoods history and the strong art tradition of Latin Americans through the centuries.
