Volunteerism: Improving teaching with your own time
<the names have been changed to protect the innocent>
Not a program or teaching style, I have instead put myself on the line.
After 20 years working in live theatre I find myself wanting to help shape the people that will be taking my place in the world. In one of the lowest rated scholl districts in the US, I have found a receptive group of teachers willing to put me on tot alk to and work with the kids in their Performing Arts programs.
Their is nothing that can engage a student or group of students more, than a new set of eyes working with them, and putting their studies in a new light. Bringing the real world into classrooms for middle and high school students puts their hard work into a clear and focused perspective.
And for me there is a huge reward seeing the kids listening and learning from me. Giving me their time and taking away a respect for a business I gave so many years to. Not being a teacher in the classic sence I interact with them in a new way. The combination of groans and cheers when it is announced that I will be making a visit makes me smile in a way nothing else has.
My suggestion for Obama, and school superintendents everywhere is encourage public involvement into the public school system.
