    Be Virtually Spooked in SL

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Another look at the virutal world of Second Life from JaneyBracken!
    - hhanks, CNN iReport producer

Halloween is nearly with us again and ghosts and ghouls will roam the earth looking for solace.  The shops are full of rubber horror masks, plastic spiders, witch’s hats and costumes for the kids to get dressed up in to go ‘trick or treating’ around the neighbourhood.  So get your treats ready in case you get a knock at the door, or suffer the consequences!

In Second Life too, people are taking a great deal of trouble to cover the spooky event.   There are many places to visit with haunted houses, graveyards and actual haunted cities, all built lovingly by the residents to scare the life out of the touring avatars.

Virtual London is no different, in Kensington there is a haunted church and graveyard.  As you walk through the mist, apparitions appear in front of you, ghostly figures whose moans fill the night air!  Bats whistle passed your head and grave’s open to reveal blood red eyes staring at you menacingly.  You take your life in your hands as you walk through the graveyard and into the haunted corn maze beyond with it’s hidden spooks, which wait for you to pass before showing themselves.   The Kensington staff even arranged to go trick or treating around the sim, ending the night with a pub crawl, this time to drink some virtual spirits instead of being haunted by them!

The clubs in Virtual London put on some great events and Halloween is a good opportunity to turn the dance floors into swamps and graveyards, complete with spider webs, broomsticks and ghostly images.  I went over to one of the Halloween events last Sunday, to see how Manager Eveshka Blackheart’s party was going.

“Janey you ok over there love? I can hardly see through all this green fog” said Billy Arentire, (Manager of the nearby Mayhem club), as he peered at me through the heavy mist shrouding the Garden Café in virtual Mayfair.  “Yes thanks” I answered.  I wasn’t too surprised that I had become fairly invisible, as I had donned my witches outfit, including a nice green witch’s skin created by a very clever little witch I had met called Cerise Button, and dressed like this, I easily melted into the background of the Café in my black outfit.   I was actually fine, and enjoying a great night out in the spooky Garden Café.

Café Manager Eveshka Blackheart had done a fabulous job arranging the event, the place looked very scary with the backdrop of a haunted house and grave stones.  The worrying thing was a giant pool in the centre of the dance floor that looked like mud (well, in fact they hinted that it was a pool of poo, but I won’t go there! and wouldn’t go there at the party either!).  There were some brave souls who went swimming in it up to their necks though, and they didn’t seem at all bothered!

Sim Manager Torric Rodas looked extra creepy as his head rotated on his shoulders, just like the scene from The Exorcist, I could almost hear the creaking of his neck bones!   People had some great costumes, ghouls, rotting bodies, witches, a vampire nurse and even Count Dracula dropped in, I’m not too sure about the guy dressed as a giant banana, but there must be a ghostly connection somewhere, he looked good anyway! The music was great too, adding to the atmosphere.  Eveshka, Billy and Torric had done a brilliant job decorating the club for the party and it was a big success.  Thanks for a great night out at the Garden Café Eveshka, it was an event to remember
