Fall of the Berlin Wall |
Fall of the Berlin Wall - Crossing the Border Freely between East and West Germany
This is the checkpoint near what was Hof, West Germany at the time. It was not long after the wall came down so we were free to pass between West and East Germany. The images at the end of the video were taken as we were going in to East Germany on a trip to visit the Castle Leuchtenburg, September 1990.
We were an American military family, living in Germany at the time the wall fell back in 1989. The duty station was in Amberg, Pond Barracks, not far from the Czech border in Bavaria. 10 months later we took a trip and crossed over the border to the former East Germany. It was quite a moving experience to cross the border freely, considering the long history and blood shed over the years.
