In 1989 I worked for the US government and lived in southern Germany. Berlin seemed like the place to bring in the New Year considering recent events in the city.  We were up front and just to the left of Brandenburg Gate as midnight approached when I noticed a crazy guy climb into a cherry picker with a microphone.  As 1990 arrived he sang a song (I'm Looking for Freedom) extended over The Wall in the air with fireworks flying everywhere.  The next morning at our hotel on the Kudamm I read in the paper that it was David Hasselhof...wow!  That's marketing.

I am retired and live in Berlin now.  I believe the Fall of the Wall is an event that is still rippling across the globe.  As an American citizen I think we have been too full of ourselves in many ways. Communism failed and capitalism is the cure all to end all.  Reality is never that simple.  I am not trying to say that the Soviets had it right but I think we can all see where uncontrolled greed has gotten us.  Without ethics and morality a culture will not survive.  The Fall of the Wall was an emotional event for me.  I can only imagine what it was like for those families that were separated for so long and suddenly came together again.
