The ship that will soon be commissioned the USS New York (LPD-21) arrived in New York Harbor at 8 am on the morning of November 2, 2009. The ship stopped in the Hudson River across from the site of the World Trade Center and rendered a 21-gun salute.
The ship will be formally commissioned on November 7, 2009 in a ceremony alongside the USS Intrepid Museum. The newest San Antonio class landing platform dock vessel is designed to carry Marines and their equipment, including helicopters and vehicles, into combat.
Named after the city of New York, the ship has 7.5 tons of steel recovered from the destroyed World Trade Center built into her bow stem.
