    Finding romance on the road

    The Road Less Traveled

We began dating in October of 2008, two months into his first year of medical school. On top of being in a very demanding field of study, he had chosen a program that is abroad, St. George's University, down in Grenada. He had the opportunity to go to Newcastle, England for his first year, and that is where our romance bloomed.

On that first visit to Nick in England, we both didn't know what to expect. Would we stay just friends? Would it turn into something more? We had an amazing weekend in Edinburgh, Scotland and discovering the little gems of Newcastle together. After a visit to Tynemouth, we decided to wash away the distance and become a couple.

With the help of Skype, having amazing mutual friends (which how we initally met), emails, and good old-fashioned handwritten letters, and a supportive family, our relationship remains strong. I visited Nick again in February, where we explored more England and even jumped over to Dublin! He is from NJ and I am from DE, so when he was home for the summer, we split up our time as best as we could between the two states. We visited the Gunks, NYC, Long Island, and even took in a Mets game. In June, I joined him in his first week of year 2 of medical school, this time in St. George's, Grenada. I visited him in September, and it was simply the best time.

We celebrated our one year anniversary in October, and now we are eagerly counting down the days till he comes home for the holidays.

Every now and then we talk about how he wishes we had started dating before he decided to go abroad for school, but, beginning our story in a dimly lit pub in Scotland; how many people have that kind of chance? He's the most amazing person, and I'm so happy to have found him and look forward to our future adventures together, wherever they may be!
