The Goal of Jounalism- A Response to Yadray's Post "I'm Going To Be Sick..."

Recently,  iReporter, yadray posted that :

"A few minutes ago, and after spending one week preparing for and reporting on today's protests in Iran, and a week prior to that reporting on Pere Lachaise cemetery I received an e-mail from a CNN iReport producer requesting a report for next week's special, assignment on Sesame Street.  Perhaps he thought I needed a break< For me, the question has often arisen,...What am I doing here?"

I believe this is worthy of addressing.

Many iReports are those that address hard hitting international issues and events that some of us feel are of great importance. They're not easy subjects and require research and thought to present.

Ifind many of these well thought out and carefully researched reports here-from both Liberals and Conservatives. (As are yadray's, and many others here)

When I research a story, I do the digging and go off- continent to get objective views, not just those that are presented on American media. I don't start with a premise and look for facts that support that, but look for all I may not know.

Health Care, Bank Reform, Israel, Afghanistan, and other international stories that I find interesting, many may not.

I understand the CNN is looking for stories that support what they have planned and that's OK. The stories about  Sesame Street and Halloween are fun and entertaining.

It's just a matter of personal preference. Personally, I enjoy both , but more the hard hitting stories and commentaries that cause me to think and reflect .

But the light hearted stories have a place too, as comic relief in this world where we find so many things to be sad about or outraged. In "Sesame Street " we find solace.

Recently, CNN, did a story about a couple being hurt by a bank that raised their payment 3 times what they could afford. CNN's story made the bank lower the payment this couple paid. I commended CNN for using it's might to give a voice to the average person.

I love it when the powerful are held accountable.

Journalism should give a voice to those  that don't have one..to affect a needed change.

Both types of stories serve a need and a purpose. Sometimes I wonder about the value of the "fluff".But then I think about the important purpose it serves as well. That's why we'll watch a comedian.

And I tell myself to "lighten up" once in a while. You'll see me throw in a "breaking ball" or  a "change up" once in a while..

Good point , yadray! Made me think, my friend!
