Fall of the Berlin Wall |
Visiting the East Side Gallery in Berlin
- hhanks, CNN iReport producer
According to historical reports, the East Side Gallery in Berlin was created in 1990 to mark the collapse of the Berlin Wall in November 1989.
The gallery, which covers the length of 105 sq. meters, features the 105 artworks made by an international group of visual artists who expressed their reaction to the Nov. 9, 2009 historical event through wall art.
In recent years, though, these artworks got "tainted" by all sorts of graffiti and vandalism, aggravated by extreme exposure to Berlin's nasty weather conditions
A 2009 initiative called for the much-needed restoration of the East Side Gallery, in line with the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
