UP NEPA!
When electricity power supply is restored, children and even adults would scream ‘Up NEPA!’ with so much joy and elated feelings. But what happened when the power supply is gone for months or more?
Growing up in Nigeria carried so many wonderful memories that I can never forget. Nigeria, I love so much and will forever respect but when it comes to the aspect of electricity, Nigeria is indeed full of nightmares.
None of these bleak memories about electricity problems in Nigeria just start today; it had been for years and years with different president succeeding the others.
I remembered, there were months we would have to go without electricity in our homes, our street and even the entire community. Sometimes, blackout may be as result of blown-up transformers that are meant to serve the community. Other times, it maybe the Nigerian Electrical Power Authority that is acting up with such excuses as repairing or doing some electrical changes.
Imagine the horrible experiences of having to live on for three months or more and straight out without any electricity power supply. Imagine how many lives were lost in the surgery rooms when there were sudden seize of electricity power supply?
Imagine having to pay huge amount to money to purchase power generator, then daily purchase of petrol or diesel to fill it up. How much does an average Nigerian earn per month that he capable of paying for daily supply of petrol or diesel for his generator? And that is if he is able to afford one.
Most times, those ones who barely have the means to buy food for their homes found it hard to own a generator and thus they resort to going to their neighbours home to recharge their mobile phones.
Often, some of them are lucky to have neighbours who understand the situation but what about if you have a neighbour who doesn’t care if you can afford a generator like him and who doesn’t want you coming to recharge your mobile phone in his house?
Nigerians want to experience the profound joy of electricity power supply. Nigerians don’t want to continue to be the subject of ridicule by their neighbouring countries like Ghana, République du Benin, Cameroun, Togo and others who have no such problem.
Nigeria seems to be the biggest country in the African continent in terms of petroleum and economy stability but the lack of electricity supply is a setback as well as dark image for the country.
I wonder what the Nigerian government is doing about this because it seems that what they mainly interested in is satisfying the foreign sector, ensuring the continuous diplomatic relationship while neglecting their own people and welfare of the country.
I strongly believe that only Nigerian can come up with solutions for themselves. As far as this present government exist, there is clear evidence that they are only after their own private welfare and not of the common Nigerians.
Kudos to Light Up Nigeria!
