Tropical Storm Update for the United States and India

The Swinden Group is advising on two tropical systems.  Tropical Depression Ida in the United States and Tropical Cyclone #4 for western India – both storms will bring the threat of flooding.

Gulf Coast States - U.S.:Tropical Depression Idamoves onshore weakens and becomes extratropical.  All tropical storm warnings are discontinued.

At 900 am CST, 1500 UTC, the center of Ida was located near about 30 miles... 50 km...east-southeast of Mobile, Alabama and about 25 miles west-northwest of Pensacola, Florida.

Ida is moving toward the northeast near 9 mph and this general motion with a turn toward the east is expected until it becomes absorbed by a front on Wednesday.

Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 35 mph with higher gusts.  Ida has lost tropical characteristics and its winds are expected to slowly diminish during the next day or so.

    Threats & Damages:

The main threat from Ida is minor to moderate flooding and flash flooding from both heavy rains and coastal storm surge.

Ida is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 3 to 6 inches with isolated maximum storm totals of 8 inches through Wednesday evening from the central and eastern Gulf Coast across the southeastern United States into the southern Mid-Atlantic States.

    Travel impact:

Expect road closures due to flooding and flight delays in / out of Atlanta (ATL) through Wednesday.

    Watches & Warnings:

Flash Flood Watchesfor northern Georgia region.

Arabian Sea – Western India – Tropical Cyclone #4: Located 300 miles south-southwest of Mumbai, India, this storm will track northward along the western India coast and make landfall in about 40 hours in northwestern India in the Gujarat region at tropical storm strength. Current winds are at 40 mph with higher gusts.

    Threats & Damages:

Interests in the Gujarat region should be prepared for heavy rains triggering widespread minor to moderate flooding and landslides. Western India has already been hit hard by heavy rains over the past couple of days, so any more will only exacerbate the flooding threat.

    Watches & Warnings:

Heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with isolated extremely heavy falls over Konkan & Goa and Madhya Maharashtra during next 48 hours.

Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over coastal Karnataka during next 24 hours.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with isolated extremely heavy falls over is likely over south Gujarat on 11th.
