Nov 27th- Georgia State Holiday for Robert E Lee
This November 27 is a Georgia State Holiday for Robert E. Lee, general of the confederate army.
I realize that many southerners have a lot of admiration for this man, but for me Lee chose the wrong side. Had the Confederacy won the Civil War, we would not be the country that we are today, and we probably wouldn't have the same freedoms.
Even after the Civil War, Robert E. Lee was opposed to Blacks getting the right to vote, and he wanted ALL Blacks deported from Virginia.
As a citizen of the state of Georgia, my opinion is that this state holiday in honor of Lee should be removed. Enough honor was given to Lee when he was pardoned by President Andrew Johnson, and when his citizenship was posthumously restored by President Gerald Ford.
