Passions over health care reform |
THE PUBLIC OPTION RALLY IN MARYLAND
- hhanks, CNN iReport producer
I was invited to cover the rally today in Silver Spring, Maryland by MoveOn.Org who organized this visibility campaign as a sign of gratitude to our Senator, Chris Van Hollen and our House Representative Donna Edwards.
Sadly the issue of healthcare reform has suffered from the usual obstructionist politiking by the GOP in Congress who continue to do everything in their power to dilute any attempts at healthcare reform.
Many of the people at the rally spoke of their disgust with the members of Congress who are trying to disable and disampower President Obama's campaign promises to the American people for change, not out of an allegiance to their constituents but out of a desperate desire to see this administration fail in its mandate for change.
One rallier (who asked to remain anomnymous as her organization does not allow her to make comments to the press) expressed her opinion that, "American politics have fallen victim once more to the kowtowing of too many members of Congress and others within the conservative movement who use their power and influence to serve the profit interests and status quo of a healthcare system run amok under the weight of special interests, the insurance cartels and the pharmaceutical companies all of whom give generously to the re-election campaigns of those who seek to preserve their profits.
What is apparent and obvious to anyone with access to C-Span is that our political system is bankrupt and has degraded into a kind of bloodsport and win at all costs proposition without any regard for the dire needs of Americans who are more and more finding themselves out of work out of their homes out of luck.
Many of the people I spoke with at the rally also felt that the bill as it has been re-written to appease the oppostion has already imperiled the hope of most everyday "Joes" of every hoping to secure affordable, quality healthcare for their beloveds.
Senators like Joe Lieberman (No not the average Joe in America) who flip-flop constantly on social issues and who jump from party to party to ensure their survival at the ballot boxes or to ensure their "consultant" and speaker fees after their tenures, are further eroding the trust and respect of everyday Americans for our political process.
What is needed urgently, in this reporter's humble opinion, is not just healthcare reform, but a long-over due reform of donations, special interests and the fleecing of the American taxpayer to subsidize and fund politicians and corporate raiders over the needs of the American people.
Yet again, I am touched and moved profoundly to see so many decent, hard-working people take time out of their hectic personal lives to fight for tangible changes in our political process and to get the results all our citizens are clamoring for to help our country regain its true ethical and moral perspective.
What do they want? A public option. When do they want it? NOW.
