C Street Foundation Loses Tax Exempt Status
The house on C Street, home to several DC law makers, has been tax exempt because it has been classified as a church. This designation has allowed the building's owner, the clandestine Christian organization The Family, to charge substantially below market rents to its residents which have included Senators John Ensign (R-NV), Tom Coburn (R-OK), Sam Brownback (R-KS) and Jim DeMint (R-SC), and Reps. Zach Wamp (R-TN), Bart Stupak (D-MI) and Mike Doyle (D-PA).
The Office of Tax and Revenue inspected the premises this summer and determined that two thirds of the premises were rented out for private residential purposes resulting in partial revocation of its tax exempt status.
Now the question arises whether its residents may be subject to paying income tax on the difference between rents they paid and actual market value.
