Chicago Leaders Honor Obama
Members of the Chicago organization, Hip Hop Detoxx, honored President Obama recently at a special event.
The organization's co-founder, Brother Enoch Muhammad- who was featured in a CNN.com article in September- spoke with iReporter Zack Isaacs about how the organization promotes individuality.
Muhammad, along with his fellow organizers, hosted the event at the National Center, on the campus of Muhammad University of Islam, next to the Mosque Maryam where the Nation of Islam is headquartered.
But the event was not geared towards religion as much as it dealt with community leaders who were willing to make a difference, like Diane Latiker and Syron Smith.
Diane Latiker, President of "Kids Off The Block Foundation", opens her home to neighborhood kids to provide a safe haven for afterschool activities.
Syron Smith, a community organizer, dedicates nearly all of his free-time to mentoring youth in his community.
The inspirational stories are needed as Chicago Public School students received their first grades of the new school year this week (November 18 for elementary students, November 19 for high schoolers)
