    New Moon at Midnight

It was my mother who first suggested we see a midnight showing of New Moon on opening night. Neither of us had ever gone to an opening night before, so we decided to make the best of the evening and watch of the replay of the first Twilight movie at 9pm. I arrived at the theater around 4:30pm with my pre-purchased tickets in hand. The theater workers had just hung up the Team Edward and Team Jacob t-shirts they would be selling at the kiosk. To show support for a local west Michigan actor, I purchased my Team Jacob shirt and did a quick wardrobe change . Not to leave poor Edward out, I purchased one of those shirts for my 8-year-old daughter who is currently crushing on the pale-skinned vampire. For the next hour and a half I stood and waited for my mother to get out of work and join me.  I had several people ask what I was waiting for; one informing me that I was crazy for standing in line 4 hours for a movie. Another was shocked when I said vampires weren’t real (his girlfriend kept giving me the “pay no attention” signal with a roll of her eyes). My mother arrived just before 6pm and we were eventually joined by a throng of other Twilight fans. When they finally seated us we made a game out of counting all of the guys in the theater. There were only about 6 of them. I wondered how they felt being surrounded by the sea of hormones. My mother, 60, and I, 30, were probably among the oldest sets of mothers and daughters in attendance. We heard stories of young girls achieving straight A’s in school in order to attend the show. We also overhead many women talking about darting out of the theater before the end of the movie to procure the best seats for New Moon. I was one of them. The bewitching hour was almost upon us. Cheers erupted as the lights dimmed and I chuckled at the antics of the audience. There were loud gasps, sighs and cheers at various points in the movie. Though we will probably never again deprive ourselves of sleep for that long, we thoroughly enjoyed our evening immersed in Twilight.
