ANTHONY PAUL THRUSH JR---CMV INFECTION BABY

I am a 21 year old unmarried first time mother of a three month old baby boy. My pregnancy went fine. I didnt have any complications. August 27th, 2009 was the best yet worst day of my life. I brought my son into this world. I hoped everything was fine but I had a gut feeling something was wrong. The doctor come in and told me my child was being transported to another hospital because they were concerned about the black and purple and red spots found all over my son. I didnt get to hold my child that day. I was wheeled past the nursery and saw my precious baby boy and it broke my heart. He was so little and I knew he was sick. I asked to go to my room as soon as possible because it tore me apart. He was so helpless and I couldnt do a damn thing about it. I kept thinking what did I do wrong?? whats wrong with my baby? The next time I saw him, he was in the transporter getting ready to be taken to a better hospital. I couldnt take looking at him. He was so helpless. Of course they kept me in the hospital for 24 hours and the moment I was released to that hospital and despite the fact that I was tired, sore, and in trendmenous pain, I headed straight to the hospital where he was at. I soon learned that my son had to have blood transfusion because he had a low platelet level. He was hospitalized for 2 weeks. The reason why he had a low platelet level was because he had a virus called CMV infection. There is no treatment for it.  CMV is a part of the herpes virus family. It can be transmitted through salvia, urine and semen. I contracted it while I was pregnant and never knew it because it is not tested for. 50-80% of adults have it yet are unaware because they dont show signs or symptoms of it. The symptoms are similar to those of a cold or the flu. However the effects of the infection are much worse for a baby born with CMV. The most common and likely are hearing and vision loss. There is a possibility that my son could have learning developmental problems. He is seeing a specialist until the age of 5. But now 3 months later he is acting like a normal baby and I couldnt be more prouder. What kills me is when he was born, I was heartbroken bc he was sooooo sick and worried he wasn't gonna make it. It makes me wonder how ppl can take their own childs life and not care??
