Wasting Youth - The Scarcity of Seats & Talent
As on November 22, 2009 Karachi University observed highest number of entry tests for BS (Hons) and BS (3rd Year) program. It is estimated that over 3000 candidates appeared for 270 seats in following disciplines: (source: Karachi University prospectus)
1. BBA (Bachelors of Business Administration)
2. Commerce
3. BPA (Bachelors of Public Administration)
4. MBA (Masters of Business Administration)
5. MPA (Masters of Public Administration)
The test conditions were relatively better and pupils were directed well by administration for whole process. The main concerns raised by students are of preparation for test and number of seats offered for admission. One group of students is interviewed who shares their feelings regarding getting admission and seats availability. The only concern is raised by students that they need an Interest Inventory and Aptitude Inventory for perusing their career best further.
Too few seats are offered for applications invited; each student has the less probability for getting admission in Karachi University. Karachi University was established in 1951 and still after claiming 58 Years of excellence they are unable to increase number of campuses in proportion to city population. For example if 270 students out of 3000 will get admission in Karachi University, what rest of them pupil have other options? Where In Karachi after closing admissions in Karachi pupil use to continue their education in public colleges which offers the degree programs, where education system just work on papers although we do have a number of good public colleges. The other option is to get admission in Private Institutes where the education system is good but they are way too expensive for majority of pupil seeking admissions for perusing their career.
As per Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, In Karachi there is only 23 Private and 6 Public institutes are recognized. The private institutes are too expensive for majority of students also the HEC recognition these days is an utmost consideration for students, if a student is graduate from Non-HEC recognized institution then he/she might have problem in getting jobs also.

It is also estimated that in 2010, over 4000 students will complete their Intermediate education and will apply for graduation programs in recognized institution. What is the estimate to get maximum of 50% students clearing intermediate exams will get admission in these institutes? Also it is really hard to estimate that how many of youth we have in age bracket of 17th to 22nd Years of age for whom we can plan career or education infrastructure in next five years. The last population census is available in Pakistan is of year 1998 (http://www.statpak.gov.pk/depts/pco/statistics/demographic_indicators98/demographic_indicators.html). How can someone just plan infrastructure and demographic growth plan as per retarded information available?
Here in Karachi, the good education institutions and system operates at very micro level which needs to be increases its infrastructure to best utilize the talent produced each year. This is the waste of energetic youth completing their intermediates and losing direction for their career just because of lack of institutions available publicly. No doubt education institutes will have to self relied not subsidized or dependent on government but this only best fits for environment where poverty not drives people fate.
I hope some day Government of Pakistan will drive themselves up from political issues and will concentrates on the fuel which drives the nation fate and the literacy rate. It is also requested to international organization funding Pakistan and having close relations for Pakistan economic growth that they should also demands better education infrastructure for utilizing talent and youth at efficiency.
