Thankful That Only Son Isn't Part of Afgan War Nightmare

MY ONLY SON SERVED IN MARINE CORP AND IS GLAD THAT HE DIDN’T MAKE IT A CAREER

My only son Keith served four years in the United States Marine Corp. He served as a military police officer from 1991-95. He left the Corp after I begged him to come home because I couldn’t deal with the possibility of him having to participate in a war.

Today if Keith had remained in the Corp he would have 18 years of military service, multiple tours of deployment to Afghanistan and/or Iraq, or God forbid been wounded or killed.

On December 3, 2009, I interviewed Keith via telephone. I questioned him about his 1995 decision to abandon his plan to retire from the Corp. I also thanked God that my son served his country and that he granted his mother’s request and didn’t re-enlist in the United States Marine Corp.

I prayed for Lea’s husband Roderick and all of our military personnel and their families who are doing the very difficult duty of serving in the various branches of the military around the world.
