Explosion at NDK Belvidere plant; Man killed at oasis
No reports from the plant that anyone was killed or injured there. NDK at this plant makes synthetic crystal. The plant is mainly automated with about 20 people working according to reports for Channel 7 news.
The Debris from the explosion flew nearly 1/4 mile to kill a man getting out of his car. He had stopped to fill up gas at the Mobile in the Belvidere Oasis Exit off of I-90.
This plant is also close to the Belvidere Chrysler plant. There is also the shool near by that may have felt the explosion. Shockwave may have been felt all the way there too. Both are close to 1mile away.
EXTRA INFO:
The building was designed with breakaway pannels, and aparently they may have not gaged how far some of this debris and panels could fly in an explosion. This is a definate question to ask authorities.
The building was built in 2003 for a little over 12 million dollars.
