Can't We All Get Along?
- zdan, CNN iReport producer
I have to say, the assignment here doesn't really match up with the issue. Pictures of "local" churches is a nice idea, but what about maybe pictures of THE CHURCH that best symbolizes "getting along" -- you know, the opposite of what the Swiss voters more or less decided.
My nomination for that church is The Mezquita or also known as The Great Mosque of Cordoba -- found in Cordoba, Spain. You can read much more about it at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Mosque_of_C%C3%B3rdoba
This is my absolute favorite of all cathedrals I have ever been in. As you can see in the second picture which is an aerial view of the cathedral at google.com, the later "Christian" "high-rise" cathedral was built in the center of the older "low-rise" mosque. Note the "cross" inside the huge low-rise structure.
I visited and photographed this special place in 2005.
In this mosque/cathedral, I felt the presence of wholeness, holiness, acceptance, forgiveness, love, and adoration and all that is spiritual MORE than in any other cathedral I had ever been in.
It is a place of wonder and, in a sense, should be an example for all of us about how to respect each other's religious beliefs and holy symbols.
#1 - The Mezquita from across the river -- high rise part is Christian, low rise part is Mosque
