The Copenhagen Summit: "The World is full of Promises"

I have been following the “Climate Summit” in Copenhagen, Denmark and listening to most of the speeches.

I do have to say that, some of the leaders have great oratorical skills, or great speech writers. They all admit that we are in a trouble.

“If we don't stop the present way we are using energy….”- and that- “….the time is now….”

“Our children will suffer from huge catastrophes, not only climacteric but also economical….” Etc…, etc…

All these are very exciting and promising to hear. The question is. What now?

After all the pictures, are taken, and hands are shaken and when everybody goes home. What will happen?

I wonder. Will those leaders impose a true policy of environmental repair to their countries? Will they just listen to everybody shouting and trying to protect their private interests?

As long as there is oil or coal in the ground to be explored. As long as we leave up to the large oil companies, that make huge revenues from it to decide, nothing or very little will be done.

Oil and coal export countries will continue lobbing, together with the oil companies and coal refineries, to pressure countries to keep using them. The private lobbyist will pressure the auto makers, to continue fossil fuel cars, or pressure countries to built coal power stations. Giving money for the alternative energy resources companies not to produce or, buying those same companies, to stop the competition.

Country leaders will feel obliged by those companies, to keep the slow pace of changing to alternative energy sources.

World leaders will fear the words of the fossil fuel companies CEOs, when they cry out “what will happen to the country’s economy and all the people that work in the industries of fossil fuels?” “What will happen to all the rich “oil barons” that live from it and support those governments?

World leaders will also be pressured by a dozen or so, Middle Eastern leaders, talking of region destabilization, if the Arab countries economies faults, as it is already happening in Dubai. Let’s not forget that Dubai is actually, the only Middle Eastern country, with the vision of seeing that, oil is not eternal. They are trying to go into a different industry like tourism and real estate. Unfortunately the recent economical crises are not in their favor.

No world leader wants to past into history, as someone that endangered the economy of his/her country, or loose a re-election because of it.

Unfortunately, we the people of this planet, regardless of nation, no longer can wait for its leaders to listen. The time to act is now.

We enjoyed living the “better life” since the “Industrial Revolution” started. Now is the time to pay. And we will pay dearly if nothing is done.

Let’s bring the scientists, the inventors that have been working on ideas for alternate energy sources, at the table. Give large incentives to companies to use them. Incentives, to quicker put their products on the market. Pass laws that, for example; all new buildings in the warm zones must have roofs made of solar panels. Countries in colder climate normally are windy. Those countries should have new buildings with Eolic energy. Establish time frames to put in the market the new product. Penalize the ones that don't. Give to buyers, tax incentives to buy or exchange their old vehicles for new energy resources cars. Give strong incentives for oil and coal companies to switch to those alternatives and penalize them if they don't.

It sounds extreme? Well! These are extreme times.

Advise the Oil producing countries that this cannot continue. Stop the black mailing of region destabilization. Help these countries with solutions for new ways of economic stability. Help start the developing countries with new energy sources. Make agreements among countries, to help each other.

It sounds extreme? Well! These are extreme times. It sounds impossibility? Nothing is impossible to the human spirit.

Quoting the President John F. Kennedy: “….We doing it, not because is easy, but because is hard……”

All this and a lot more must be done. If not, for ourselves, for our children. If we do not want to end up like the World holocaust and catastrophe movies, that Hollywood is so famous for.
