The Bread and Butter Project - A Business Helping Hungry Americans

The bread + butter project was the brainchild of 10 year-old Emma and 12 year-old Katie O'Rourke, who were bothered by what they learned at school about hunger problems in the US.  With a laptop computer, and a little help from their parents, the girls launched a brand, a blog, and an online clothing store that raises money for food pantries.  The bread + butter project donates 50% of its profits to nonprofit organizations that help feed the hungry.  It's about working together as a family to develop a sustainable business model and find out what it takes to make a real difference.  Starting with a single food pantry in August 2009, the bread + butter project expanded in November and is now partnering with a large food bank in each of the six New England states and is looking forward to a national expansion later this year.  Katie and Emma are learning about all parts of the business - from product design and pricing to marketing and promotion - and are learning more about hunger in the US.
