Ringing in the new year |
Dec 31,2009 morning in Kotzebue, Alaska
Waiting for the partial lunar eclipse. The eclipse started up here at about 9:52 am AST. We had a light haze in the sky so pictures are not as clear as I would have liked. It was a beautiful morning and I did manage to take a few pictures showing the eclipse. Overall the eclipse only covered about 1/4 of the bottom of the moon. Being that this is also what is called a blue moon and then to have even a partial eclipse available to see where I am at, was quite unique. I would guess the odds are quite low of having an eclipse and a blue moon at same time. In some of the pictures you'll see the set up or start of an annual dogsled race to the village of Noatak which began at 9am. I also added a few pictures of the moon this morning taken from a hill overlooking Kotzebue. Enjoy these views from the coast of NW Alaska, 26 miles above the Arctic Circle. All pictures were taken in total darkness except of course the glow of the full moon.
