The Frozen Florida Shores
We broke a record here in Pensacola Florida today, 9 straight days with below freezing temps and we have a couple of more record breaking days to go. I live on the shores of Escambia Bay, in Pensacola Florida and I have been watching and photographing the effects of the icy weather each day. This morning I found a couple of very interesting signs that the elements and wildlife are being pushed to their limits. First, I thought that it was just sea foam, that froffee white stuff collecting on the shore and soon realized that it wasn't foam, but the accumulation of slushy ice and the effects of several days below freezing. The other sad thing I found was that our shallow bay is home to a local “icon” the mullet fish and with such low temps, I have found a number of these little guys who haven’t fared well. They are washing up along the beaches everywhere. If this keeps up, as our local weather news caster predicts, we may see ice forming along the edge of the bay. That hasn’t happened in over 25 years.
