Update: Catastrophic 7.0 Haiti Earthquake, Tsunami Alert Cancelled (video)
Following today's 7.0 Richter scale earthquake with an epicenter a scant 10 miles from Haiti's capital of Port-au-Prince and felt as far afield as Cuba and the Dominican Republic, a tsunami alert previously given has now been rescinded.
According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center the alert was cancelled due to the location of the quake. Reportedly, according to this U.S. agency, "destructive tsunami waves (were) near the earthquake epicenter but there is not a threat to coastal areas further away. Therefore the tsunami watch issued by this center is now cancelled."
The catastrophic shaker reportedly caused dozens of deaths and the demolition of landmark buildings in Petionville, near Port-au-Prince. Among the edifices lost is a hospital. No toll has officially been taken but thousands are feared dead, more injured.
