Haiti earthquake aftermath |
Haiti - 37 Aftershocks in Port-au-Prince hinder rescue effort
(37) Aftershocks have rocked the Haitian capital since the initial earthquake of 7.0 magnitude. Among the aftershocks are (14) major aftershocks - those of magnitude 5.0 or greater. The latest one was a 4.8 about 18 minutes ago (21:39 UTC).
This brings an already chaotic and destroyed city further into fear and desperation. Thousands slept in the streets last night. Hundreds more are living outside- many afraid to stay in any buildings for fear of further tremors and building collapse. Hospitals are filled with victims with patients on the floors, outside. Lack of water, medical supplies, and shelter stands to bring more anguish to an already miserable situation.
Rescue teams from around the world have arrived this morning. Among the first few search dog teams from Spain and other countries that are arriving to seek out those still trapped underneath the rubble and in buildings, some had to hold off in their search of certain buildings on several occasions due to the aftershocks and the threat of further collapse. Since Port-au-Prince lacks a first responder or coordinated Fire Department the search has been all but null, except for civilians and few police with flashlights searching throughout the night. No building is deemed safe at this time so the search effort is precautious and gradual, leaving people trapped another night. China, Spain, France, Iceland, US, and UK among others are sending Search & Rescue teams and should be fully deployed by early evening today. *Update- (3) SAR teams from the Virginia, Los Angeles, and Miami will be arriving to Port-au-Prince within 2-4 hours.
AP Journalists are reporting carnage and people in "horrific conditions".
This report will be updated periodically with a list of aftershocks in the region. Other notable earthquakes today have been in the Philippines 5.2, Indonesia 5.7, and Samoa 5.3.
This information is gathered from seismic centers at the USGS Caribbean zone, University of Puerto Rico, and Havana, Cuba.
