The Salesian Missions school ENAM, the “National School of Arts and Trades” at Port-au-Prince, has been affected and 200 students, teachers and Salesians are missing/trapped in the ruins. (The school is informally referred to as "Saint John Bosco Institute" and is considered the top vocational school in Haiti.)
The Salesian School is one of many around the globe that receives funds from Salesian Missions US offices in New Rochelle, NY.
Currently waiting on word about the students, staff and Salesians. We have confirmed there were no U.S. citizens among the missionary volunteers at the school.
The Salesian Information Agency (SIA) is reporting that an 85-year-old Salesian member of the Order, Brother Hubert Sanon, was among the victims of Tuesday's earthquake in Haiti.
Fr. Ducange Sylvain, who was appointed the new Superior of the Vice Province of Haiti last December, described the situation to SIA, saying, “We have been hit very hard,” referring to the situation of the Salesians.
According to Fr. Sylvain, the Salesian house of Port-Au-Prince Enam and the foundations nearby the “Saint John Bosco” Institute such as the Work of the Little Schools of Father Bonhem and the “Lakay” were the hardest hit Salesian missions in the city.
“The Salesians from the centre are injured. Brother Sanon died under the ruins and sadly over 200 pupils are still buried there,” the priest said.

In Haiti, Salesian Missions has been operating a feeding program that feeds 20,000 children.
ENAM at Port-au-Prince included a primary school, professional school, youth groups and a street children program.
Currently the schools and offices operated by Salesian Missions in Port-au-Prince are assumed destroyed and reaching the humanitarian aid workers is impossible. Salesian Missions is dispatching an emergency response team from the Dominican Republic right now.
Salesian Missions has been working in Haiti since 1936, and specializes in helping children in the world's poorest countries through feeding programs and educational opportunities. They operate schools and programs in more than 130 countries around the globe.
