Naples Garbage Problem Still Not Solved
Still photos and video footage shows the overwhelming garbage situation in the suburbs of Naples, Italy. Garbage piles are often set on fire, reportedly by individuals paid by the local mafia to instigate problems. These trash piles affect large numbers of American servicemen and their families stationed here as members of the US Navy's Command Headquarters for Naval Forces Europe, and the NATO Joint Forces Command, Naples.
This problem has been ongoing for years. The new Prime Minister Berlusconi ran with cleaning up Naples as one of his primary objectives. The military did participate in some small scale cleanup operations, but the trash still fills the streets.
Video and photos were taken from 22-24 June 2008.
