Carhartts And Pickup Trucks Win Big In Massachusetts
- hhanks, CNN iReport producer
Guess that's all it takes-Carhartt Jackets and a pick up truck to get elected to the U.S. Senate in Massachusetts.. Scott Brown is just a "country boy". Really? When someone tells me that, I put my hand on my wallet.
It was this carefully crafted image and the remark about the "People's Seat". Wow! Another clever line, like "Read my lips" that won over the gullible people of Massachusetts. Buy me some Carhartts!
With national health care and a reform agenda at stake, you'd think the voters would keep it in perspective.
That wasn't the case in Massachusetts' special election tonight where Scott Brown defeated Democrat Martha Coakley.
Martha let Scott define her and didn't explain how health care reform would benefit Massachusetts. She didn't want to get "down and dirty" and shake some hands...yes, shake some hands at Fenway Park.. Big Mistake!
Scott Brown was clever or at least those that designed his campaign were clever.( Karl Rove, the architect?) I'm sure he'll have the same handlers in DC. The same ones that misrepresented health care reform to the nation. The guns for hire.
This race was more, I believe about the compromises that Democrats have made to Republicans and the lack of leadership that has been shown in the Congress.
George Bush got whatever to hell he wanted from Congress with fewer votes than the Democrats have with 59 Senators now!
People are looking for leadership and in a vacuum, where leadership doesn't exist, people will follow a mirage through the desert because they think there's water.
That is what Scott Brown and the GOP have succeeded in convincing Massachusetts voters of tonight.
Their illusion is real to the desperate and jobless. Their "promises of change" will lead to more of what we had under the Bush administration- corporate welfare and tax cuts to the rich.
But what have the Democrats offered in contrast? Petty bickering and nothing on the table that addresses Joblessness and foreclosures.
Joblessness is the biggest concern for all Americans. Where are the jobs, Congress?
This should be a wake up call for Democrats. Maybe Scott Brown's win tonight will stiffen Democrats resolve.
Then again, it could be misinterpreted as a glitch or aberration in the whole process and not relevant to what Americans are feeling.
If this is how Democrats view this victory tonight, they will miss the valuable lesson from this defeat.
The seeds of a greater benefit can emerge out of every adversity. Democrats must seize this moment , embrace this defeat and rise to the challenge.
Or they can diminish and lose big at mid-term elections.
