    Obesity: Causes and Treatments

If you have a health problem, and you treat the symptom and not the underlying cause, you will likely experience only a temporary relief. But the symptom will likely return again and again. This is what often happens with trying to lose those extra pounds. The pounds who've lost and regained, again, and again...

Obesity refers to a weight condition which is defined as being 20 percent over the prescribed weight for  a particular age, build or height. Obesity is an excessive amount of body fat. In a recent study, results showed that one-third of adults can be considered obese. About a third of America's children ages 2-19 – about 23 million kids – are overweight or obese.

Some of the causes of obesity include:

*A diet low in fiber and high in refined carbohydrates, especially sugars.

*Nutritional imbalance, in which food is used as a substitute for love or a way to stuff your uncomfortable feelings back inside you.

*Physical imbalance. Toxins in your digestive tract that drain your energy and cause you to eat foods like sugar that make you even more toxic in the long run.

    *Lack of physical activity

*Genes. Studies of identical twins who have been raised apart show that genes have a strong influence on one's weight. Overweight and obesity often run in families. Your chances of being overweight are greater if one or both of your parents are obese. Your genes also may affect the amount of fat you store in your body and where on your body you carry the extra fat.

Conventional therapies for obesity have included drugs, many of which have had serious side effects. One such drug, Phen-Phen, has been pulled from the market. More extreme forms of therapies have included stomach stapling, colectomy (reducing the area of the intestine through which food can be absorbed) and liposuction. All have been known to be accompanied by sometimes serious side effects.

    Safe Treatment of Obesity

*Research is showing that the amount of calories consumed is not as important as what type of calories they are.

*Cultures that eat high-fiber diets have a very low incidence of obesity. High fiber diets improve glucose tolerance and provide a feeling of fullness.

*Do not eat too little. Any diet that is less than 1,200 calories is not effective as a means of weight loss.

*Sugar in the form of candy, soda, cakes, cookies, ice cream is responsible for much of childhood obesity.

*Glutamine. Food cravings, especially for sweets, can be caused by low blood sugar. You can stabilize the delivery of blood sugar to your brain, and stop the cravings, by taking two 500 milligram capsules of glutamine, three times a day between meals.

*D-Phenylalanine. If you overeat to help yourself deal with emotional pain – if you're sensitive, cry easily, crave comfort and love certain foods – you may need the amino acid d-phenylalanine. This supplement builds up your brain's store of endorphins, natural opiates that help to create feelings of pleasure.

*Chromium Picolinate. This mineral increases the ability of body cells to use insulin. Low levels of this nutrient have been found in obese people and supplementation has increased weight loss.

How Fat s Can Help You Lose Weight

A deficiency of certain types of good fats, called essential fatty acids (EFA), that your body requires can lead you to crave and overeat the bad kinds of fats and help you put on extra pounds. Good sources of EFA's include leafy greens, fatty fishes, avocados, nuts and seeds. EFA's stimulate fat metabolism, trigger the production of hormones that make you feel full and balance your body's levels of insulin (the hormone that burns sugars). The following supplements are excellent sources of EFA's:

Flaxseed Oil. This oil helps reset your body's thermostat to a normal level so you burn excess calories.

    Take 1 tablespoon a day.

GLA. Helps you lose weight by activating dormant brown fat, the type of fat that helps burn excess calories. Brown fat makes it possible to expend ingested fat as energy rather than storing it as excess white fat.

CLA.  This EFA, conjugated linoleic acid, can help in weight loss. In an scientific study, people who took 3,000 milligrams of CLA daily lost 20 percent of their body fat in 3 months without dieting.

Fish Oils.  While not directly involve din weight loss, fish oil can be an important supplement for maintaining health, especially heart health.
