The Slow Death of Religious Freedom
As a young boy growing up in the suburbs of the city, I was raised to respect the values and traditions of others. Just because another decides to be Jewish, Islamic, Muslim, or Catholic it was their religious freedom to do so. Prayer was as important as the National Anthem. Churches drove the community and were the common place for neighborhoods to plan activities and do things together. When I got older, the decision of religion became as important as my profession.
Today, religion has become a critical issue among those who want to inflict their values without any respect to the traditions of others – the attack can be considered racism because it discriminates against one form of religion. Everyday a religious group seeks to destroy the religious freedom of others. For example, a government contractor who places bible verses on scopes. It wasn’t the actual verse it was numbers and a letter. In fact, I bet until it was complained about, no soldier even knew what the inscription was about. How long had that company been doing that? What about that companies religious freedom to express their traditions? Every time you attack a religious entity you force your values on that entity. An example of a real attack against any religion would be to take away the Koran in Gitmo and give them Bibles.
America was founded because our fore fathers didn’t like the forced religion in Europe. They developed a nation where all religions could come and enjoy religious freedom in any religion they choose. Any attack against any religion in this country is an attack against the very fabric this country was founded on – and slowly killing the only religion on the chopping block – Christianity.
Martin Luther King had a dream where all races, religions, and peoples could live and play together in harmony.
Somehow we have strayed from that course and instead decided to attack ourselves with a self inflicted war against the values and traditions of others.
