Whale Spotted at the Malibu Pier... I only spotted Pelicans!

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Pixel said she was going to spend the day at the pier to try to see the whale.
    - davidw, CNN iReport producer

A Grey Whale has been swimming around the Malibu surf side for over 24 hours. I quickly went down to see if i too could catch a glimpse of this  great mammal. It is very rare to see a whale this close to the pier, especially for any prolonged period of time. The "adolescent" whale had been playing since Tues. at around 10am, when a fisherman first spotted him,  and continued to swim till around 3:00pm Wednesday. He has swam in and around the Malibu coastline, catching a few waves with the surfers. I spoke to Joann Waugh assistant manager at Malibu Outfitters. Joann was kind enough to let me know just what I'd been missing! She had been enjoying watching the whale off and on over the last 24 hours. Joann said, she really hoped he would be back when she retuned to work today and was so pleased when he finally surfaced again. I waited with many others for any sign of  this 25 foot whale.. but no such luck. My time was spent watching fishermen and very friendly Pelicans at play. The best time to watch the migration of whales in Southern California is from December to April. They are naturally social animals. I will be back tomorrow in hopes that this social Malibu whale will return for another visit before moving on.
