This iReport is part of an assignment:
Boy Scouts turn 100 |
Here's to another 100 years
I was a scout goining all the way back to 2nd grade and eventually earning my Eagle rank. I am currently a Scouter, adult leader, because of the impact I thought the scouting program had on my life. I have two boys and want them to have the same opportunities I did with the scouts. And I want them to have the memories I have. Even the rainy campouts, sometimes they are the best.
Last year, after a 20 year hiatus I got to go back to summer camp with my oldest son. It was as much a thrill for me as I think it was for him. Spending a week in the mountains, jumping in the lake every morning before breakfast to wake up was fantastic.
I think scouts is more relevant today, in the age of facebook and video games, and the "WHAT CAN YOU DO FOR ME ATTITUDE" that so many youth seem to have. Scouting leads the youth to self discovery and independence, something that is truly needed.
Why do you think so many FBI agents and legislators in congress have been part of the scouting program? Why has so many of the astronauts that have been to the moon been Scouts or Eagle Scouts?
Besides where else can you learn to cook a 15 pound turkey in a cardboard box?
