Passions over health care reform |
The Democrats are mindlessly destroying their brand
(Response to Presidents Obama press briefing today, specifically the part on health care reform)
The Democratic party cannot help but lose seats. That is cyclical, and historically unavoidable during a recession and when tackling controversial issues such as health care.
What President Obama should impress upon on the Democratic party is that they cannot choose whether to lose seats or not, but they can decide the terms on which they do so.
This is about long term brand building. Will the party be remembered for historical reform and, subsequently, be able to run on this in the future, or will they be remembered as the party that got nothing accomplished?
If the party loses in 2010, it will lose for one of two reasons: because it was bold, or because it was ineffective. Either way, the very outcome will determine its chances in 2012!
