Mike Huckabee, the Taliban, and Risking Soldiers' Lives

2012 presidential hopeful and current FOX News talking head Mike Huckabee recently posted this on his Facebook page:

"News agencies are reporting that US troops and our Nato allies are about to launch an offensive against the Taliban in Marjah, Afghanistan. Please keep these brave soldiers in your prayers this weekend and thank them for their service."

This is just another indication that Operational Security, or OPSEC, has fallen to the wayside now with interactive tools that allow us to say what we want, when we want, without thinking about its implications on military operations that will cost our men & women in uniform their lives.

The fact that Gov. Huckabee making this kind of error accentuates the truth that this is not a Democrat or Republican problem--the folks who do realize and keep up with Afghanistan realize that this war will not be won only by bullets and guns. Our battles today--and we should know this very well after 9/11--will be won with information. Defense Secretary Robert Gates knows this, having just recently realigned the Pentagon's focus from large, regional conflicts between nation-states to small, intricate conflicts where race, religion and other interpersonal designators make up the different sides.

Supporters of Governor Huckabee on Facebook have reacted strongly against his statement. Here are just a few of the things they have to say:

"Can we please launch an offensive against our enemy without the news organizations letting them know ahead of time so that they can prepare? That would be great! Maybe even shorten the war and save American lives."

"Maybe I am just naive but why would we announce an offensive?

"I totally disagree with media announcement ... totally totally don't understand. Now I've got to go to confessional first!"

"I pray for our troops safety but dang that media for announcing our warfare strategies to the enemy EVERY TIME! Some things just do NOT need to be plastered all over the tv and internet for the whole world to see. GRRR!!!"

When all the Taliban or al-Qaeda has to do is turn on FOX or CNN, or follow Mike Huckabee on Facebook, to figure out where our brave men and women in uniform are going to be and what they are going to do, we have a serious problem. We must put OPSEC back into the forefront in Afghanistan and any other area where American lives are at risk.
