Living and Working a Cottage Industry
There's something distinctly different about H & L Enterprises. Although it's been years since they delved into the main stream market with their products the early days of their business start up prepared them for todays economy.
When they opened their home studio the phone company did not offer a business phone to home businesses. They learned back then how to conserve products and stretch every penny.
According to Investor Words, the defination of Cottage Industry is an industry where the creation of products and services is home-based, rather than factory-based.
While products and services created by cottage industry are often unique and distinctive given the fact that they are usually not mass-produced, producers in this sector often face numerous disadvantages when trying to compete with much larger factory-based companies.
There may be some disadvantages to running a cottage industry but according to Patricia Hostetter Lopez of H & L Enterprises, she wouldn't have it any other way. "The freedom of expression and the ability to experiment with different mediums drives me to tackle other things. Not only that but I have the option to personalize gifts for people which big stores don't."
That's how her business grew to include her own line of candles, hand crafted crosses, handmade retablos, silk screened pillows, throws and a multitude of other 3 dimentional forms.
Lopez didn’t settle down and build her home studio until 1981. She cut her teeth on graphic design in her early days and incorporated that knowledge into a home based printing business along with her main salesman, her dashing husband, Frank, a distinguished writer and New Mexico historian in his own right.
Her one of a kind, distinctive art, featured in Galleries, such as the Albuquerque Airport Gallery, which will feature one of her handcrafted Southwest Kachina dolls this Spring, will be viewed by thousands of travelers from all over the world.
Though they faced many challenges over the years, the one constant has been that Lopez has forced H & L Enterprises to keep up with the times.
Computer literacy was a top prioirty and Lopez designed her own elaborate online webstore featuring most all the handmade treasures H & L Enterprises offers. I say most all because at the time of this writing there may be new products that haven't quite made it to the online showcase at the rate they are staying ahead of the pack!
You can view H & L Enterprises unique one-of-a-kind, hand manufactured gifts and products by visiting their webstore:
