    Calling all Hummer drivers!

Hummer, what SUV's used to be

So I have been an avid off road enthusiast for many years.  I'm actually a Toyota guy, well was, until I started looking for a truck I didnt' have spend a ton of time and money building up to be a capable rig.  I compared all sorts of vehicle qualities, fuel economy, off road capability, towing capacity, comfort, etc... and the Hummer H3 came out on top.  With its dual factory lockers and factory 4:1 transfercase gearing, it and the Jeep Rubicon are in a league of their own.  Though, the H3 comes with 33" tires, the Rubicon's are smaller.  The Hummer is just more refined than the Jeep with a better powertrain and that was important to me.

So what is it like to drive?  Well the short answer is it's fun but everyone says that.  On road, it's a truck through and through.  It doesn't ride badly for a truck, but compared to a car, it is all truck.  It is was an SUV was before they were softened for the masses.  Cruising 65 MPH, I can get a solid 20 MPG.  To contrast, my 1994 4runner gets about 15 MPG under the same circumstances, both vehicles have the same size tires and have correct gearing.  It has a nice stereo and large sunroof.  It's all wheel drive handles snowy roads exceptionally well.

The real fun starts when you leave the pavement.  Hummers can wheel some trails.  Many will argue that the Rubicon is a better rock crawler due to its solid front axle and they are right.  But at speed, the Hummer can "dust" the Rubicon badly so there is a give and take.  The Hummer is the kind of vehicle you can drive all day and not be fatigued.  You can then hit up a hard trail, and drive all day again the next day.  It mixes rugged capability with some interior refinement which makes it a great expedition style vehicle.

If it has an issue it's that it is small.  That's right, Hummers are small.  They might have good ground clearance and large tires, but the vehicle itself is not at all large for its class.  Then again, those outstanding Hummer approach and departure angles mean low over hangs and thus a shortened body/frame.   Too bad people don't actually measure vehicles and compare them before succumbing to an optical illusion created by squared off edges thus incorrectly assuming Hummers are large. (Well the H1 is very large)

So to answer the question about what it's like to drive the largest not acutally largest SUV around, well it runs out of room inside pretty fast but it has a roof rack with a 1000lb capacity so one can store camping gear up there. It can pull a 3500 lb trailer if that won't work.   It's fun and makes for excellent vacations to way out of the way places.  It pulls my trailer, carries my dog, my surf board, wife, and camping gear, just about anywhere I want it to.  It also takes me to work through any weather.

Hummer is what SUV's used to be, utility vehicles first, everything else second.  I harkens back to when 4runners didn't come in 2WD (or Jeep Wranglers for that matter)  They aren't for everyone, they are a niche brand, but they are a vehicle that should exist in the line up of any full  line auto manufacturer.  Really, if all SUV's were like Hummers, there would be al ot more people buying cars who don't really need SUV's but that's another topic all together.
