MAVERICK SONGWRITER OFFERS SALE of “HIT SONG” COPYRIGHT ON EBAY FOR 1 MILLION DOLLARS
Publicity Stunt, or Clever Marketing Ploy?
Woodbridge, NJ – March 4, 2010 – A relatively unknown songwriter from New Jersey is attempting to sell the Copyright of an original song on eBay for one million dollars. Floyd Murray, a middle aged performing musician who wrote and owns the song, has announced that the auction will begin on eBay on March 26, 2010, and the winning bidder, if any, will own the Copyright and any and all related Royalties to the song titled “Never Is Forever”. The search title of the auction on eBay is “Hit Song Copyright” (In quotation marks), and there will be links there to a downloadable audio version of the song, as well as a video and printed lyrics for prospective bidders to preview.
When asked why he is selling the rights to his music, Murray replied: “The music industry has changed drastically over recent years. Digital distribution is not only widely accepted now, it has become the norm. Record and CD sales are way down, and revenues at the four major labels (Warner, EMI, Sony BMG, and Universal) have been on a slow decline throughout the previous decade even as movies held steady at the box office and video games grew. There is now a huge myriad of young musical talent out there with access to world-class computer based recording tools posting their stuff on myspace, youtube and facebook, but are they making any money?
The game has changed. What is called the music business today is not the business of getting a record deal from a major label like it used to be. It's much more independent now, and it’s becoming clear that performance rights, touring and merchandise sales are the driving sector within the business. Publishing royalties are how you get paid if someone covers, samples, or licenses your song for a movie or commercial. This, for a songwriter, is your pension plan.
My age and my life situation (and the current industry and economy) dictates that I won’t be going on tour any time soon to promote and perform my music, and I haven’t actively pursued any publishing or licensing deals. I’ve been sitting on this song, and every time someone hears it, they tell me how great it is and ask why it’s not on the radio. So I’m just offering it up to someone who sees it on its merits and can take it and run with it. I guess I’m selling my pension plan. I'm creating my own economic stimulus package.”
When asked if he expects it to sell for a million dollars, Murray said: “I wrote this song with the specific intention of it being a catchy, radio-friendly, pop kind of commercial song… with one of those infectious little melodies that gets stuck in your head. It’s a bit outside of my normal writing style, an experiment of sorts. I believe that in the right hands it can be a huge hit and make a lot of money. And since I really don’t have any music industry contacts to pitch it to, I figured that I’d experiment further and try to sell the copyright of the song on eBay. I’m not sure if anyone has done that yet, so I thought I’d give it a try. Do I think someone will pay a million bucks for it? Well, anything is possible. I have nothing to loose either way…except the posting fees (and seller fees, which will be significant.) But this song in the right hands… or ears, stands the potential to make my offer tenfold. I humbly must admit, based on my gut and the response that this song brings, that this is a major hit song.”
Floyd Murray has been making a living performing his live music in bars and restaurants for nearly 20 years.
