Alice in Wonderland: A Metaphor for Life?
Tim Burton's re-creation of Alice in Wonderland, while brilliant, colorful, and a genius work of art, left me questioning my own life.
In this version, Alice is all grown up. She arrives at a party only to learn that it's all about her, a forced engagement, and some other circumstances that are not in her control. Confused, Alice finds her thoughts drifting to a rabbit in the bushes. It provides the escape she needs to leave her present situation and the decisions she can't yet face.
And if you've read the books and seen the Disney version, you know what happens next. Alice falls down the hole for a return visit and this time, she is to slay the jabberwocky and help the white queen reclaim her title.
Alice quickly realizes that she's not in a dream and her troubles have followed her down the hole. She remembers fondly that her Dad names six impossible things before breakfast. These could stand for anything in our lives that we find impossible to accomplish until we conquer our fears - the jabberwocky.
As Alice battles her demons, the impossible tasks that lays in front of her, and the ultimate battle - she emerges a stronger woman. She climbs out of the rabbit hole full of confidence, rejects the marriage proposol, and purposes a business plan to her "would be" father in law and sets off on a voyage.
While I was at the theater to see another great Tim Burton film and an amazing performance by Johnny Depp, I emerged thinking about my own life. What six impossible things do I need accomplish? Where's my jabberwocky? Will I have the courage to conquer my fear and be a soldier? And most importantly, it's ok to be mad. All the best people are.
