No Jobs? Make Your Own!
S.I.F.E. (Students in Free Enterprise) at Northwest Arkansas Community College decided several years ago that children needed to be taught about capitalism. Then, the economy tanked...
For the last two years, NWACC SIFE has been teaching elementary school kids how to start their own businesses. They decide in small groups what types of products are in demand. Then, they borrow the money to buy materials, manufacture their products, sell their products, pay back their loans, and apply their profits toward next year's selling frenzy at the college.
Today, the NWACC Student Center was alive with youngsters enthusiastically hawking their wares. Last year, most student groups sold all their materials. This year, most groups appeared to have product left over. Is that a sign of the economic times?
