Sermon in a Sentence: Church Signs of Alabama

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     amandawriter says she sometimes feels like an outsider as someone from the northern part of the country now living in the South. She says she wasn't sure what she would discover in documenting the church signs nearby and that she didn't find the 'fire-and-brimstone' sorts of church signs that she thought she might encounter. Instead, she encountered people very serious about their faith and a pulpit minister with a desk calendar full of inspirational church signs who is proud of his 'sermons in a sentence.'
    - nsaidi, CNN iReport producer

After seeing the Church Signs  assignment, I had to take a drive this afternoon around my region here  in central Alabama. There are so many churches - and so many stereotypes  about the Bible Belt, especially its supposed religious intolerance,  that I wanted to see what the signs actually reflected. What I  discovered might surprise you. Includes a brief interview with Tom  Steed, Pulpit Minister of the Auburn Church of Christ, who was kind  enough to agree to an on-the-spot interview when I walked into the  office unannounced and introduced myself as an Auburn PhD candidate AND  CNN ireporter. Good sport comes to mind - thank you, Tom!

And in the  spirit of full disclosure, I should say that I am a non-religious person  unaffiliated with any of the demoninations represented on these signs. I  attempted to be an objective and open observer, reacting to the  evidence I discovered and using my four years of experience living in  this place as a foundation for my commentary.

    Thank you for watching!

P.S. If you watch this video fullscreen, the shots are really poor quality. I promise the original edited image quality is much better, but the video size required a lot of compression! My apologies! :)
